Holmesglen graduates Sivanthi Punchihewa and Morgana Meighan used their studies in the HLT47315 Certificate IV in Health Administration [PAGE ID 52] to find exciting new careers with major health providers and community health clinics.

The course has a range of career pathways including roles as a medical receptionist, ward clerk and medical executive assistant.

Sivanthi undertook a career change after completing a Bachelor of Human Resources by completing health administration at Holmesglen.

“I always wanted to work in health/medical administration and thought this was a good pathway to get a job in the industry,” says Sivanthi.

Morgana’s ambition was also focused on finding a job in an industry she respected – following in similar footsteps to her grandmother and aunt, who both worked as nurses.

“I took a step back and reassessed what I really wanted with my career,” she says.

“I’ve always been interested in the medical field and helping people, and the course seemed like a good step to take. It’s certainly been one of the best I’ve taken.”

Health administration professionals are employed in many job roles across different healthcare and medical workplaces.

Sivanthi (pictured below) works in the health administration team at Monash Health. She provides customer service, coordinates referrals and billing, and helps with vaccination bookings.

“The most rewarding part is helping patients get through their appointments. I like getting their documents ready and making sure they have a smooth transition when they come to the clinic.”

Morgana is gaining experience as a virtual medical receptionist for various healthcare clinics across Australia. She provides admin support to patients and clients in healthcare areas such as podiatry, psychology, speech pathology, and physiotherapy.

“I’m able to support people with the specialist help they’re needing,” says Morgana.

“Knowing that they’re one step closer to being a little more confident with themselves or their health is really rewarding.”

The HLT47315 Certificate IV in Health Administration [PAGE ID 52] focuses on the administrative functions and ethical requirements of healthcare.

Students learn about medical terminology, professional practice, billing, accounts and recordkeeping, and how to produce coded clinical data.

Sivanthi says the course’s strong healthcare focus has benefitted her new career, particularly understanding the legal requirements and confidentiality of the sector.

“The health-related subjects have helped me so much. I can apply my theory and knowledge into practical work now.”

Morgana says the health administration course gave her strong applied knowledge, which has supported her entry into the healthcare industry.

“The course really helped me with medical terminology. It is used so much in industry.

“The skills I learned at Holmesglen – including billing, clinical coding and how to use Excel – have been helpful with my day-to-day work. I use what I learned from my course every day.”

The course can be completed in just six months with full-time study, or in a year, if studying part-time, which can be a great option if you’re working and want to change careers.
